Welcome to Cub Scout Pack 122!
3-2-1 Blast Off! Our annual June Pack Meeting is a high-flying celebration where we recognize the achievements of our Scouts as they "move up" to their next rank and launch the model rockets they’ve built. This event is open to all Scouts, families, and friends who want to learn more about Scouting.
Date: Please check the News & Events page for the most up-to-date scheduling.
Location: Dorbrook Recreation Area Soccer Fields
Parking: Park at the Soccer Fields Parking Area and then walk down to the trees by the western fields.
Pack Meeting Coordinates: 40.296286, -74.133995
10:00 AM – Moving Up Ceremony: We begin with our formal ceremony to celebrate our Scouts' advancement to their new Dens.
10:30 AM – Safety Briefing: A mandatory review of rocket launch safety procedures and range rules.
10:45 AM – Launch Window Opens: Scouts and friends take turns at the launch pads!
To ensure a fun and safe day for everyone, please follow these equipment standards:
The Launch Pads: The Pack provides two standard Estes launch pads (1/8 inch launch lug) and electronic controllers for all Scouts to use. Scouts are welcome to bring their own launchpads (there is plenty of space on the field)!
Engines: We recommend model rockets using Class A or Class B engines. Engines larger than Class C are not permitted.
Rockets: Standard, beginner model rockets are recommended for younger scouts as these will fit the standard 1/8 inch launch lug on our launch pads. This would be generally most any rocket that supports 1/2A, A, B, and/or C class engines.
Preparation: Write your name and Den number clearly on your rocket. Ensure all glue and paint are completely dry before the event to prevent parachute deployment failures. Rockets will sometimes get swallowed up in the fields on brush to the east of the launch field, and they might be discovered months later by the grounds keeping crew (so identifying information may help get a lost rocket returned).
The Flight Line: All spectators must stay behind the designated safety line. Only the "Range Officer" and the Scout currently launching may approach the pads. Launchpads will be set up at safe distances around the field, and a Scout launching a rocket should count down their launch loudly to ensure everyone is aware of the pending launch.
Recovery: For safety, do not run into the launch area to catch a falling rocket. Wait until the rocket has landed and the "All Clear" is given by leadership.
Misfires: If a rocket does not launch, we follow a 60-second "cool down" period before inspecting the igniter.
Pay Attention: All participants should watch the skies and be mindful of rockets. As we will have multiple launchpads setup, it is everyone's responsibility to be aware of their surrounding. If you see a parachute or other retrieval device fall to deploy, call it out loudly so everyone is aware.
Seating: Bring camp chairs or blankets, as we will be out on the soccer fields.
Friendship: This is a great recruitment event! Bring a friend who might be interested in joining the Pack—they can even launch a rocket on our pads!
Sun & Water: While are shade trees at the edge of the fields, there is very little shade on the fields themselves; please bring sunscreen and plenty of water.
In the event of unfavorable winds or rain, we utilize a pre-scheduled rain date (typically the following Saturday). If inclement weather is forecasted, the Cubmaster will notify all families via email by 8:00 am on the morning of the launch.
The direction and intensity of the wind will determine what side of the field we use for the launchpads.
