Welcome to Cub Scout Pack 122!
Started in 1953, the Pinewood Derby is one of the most iconic traditions in Cub Scouting. At our December Pack Meeting, each scout is given a kit containing a block of pine wood, four plastic wheels, and four metal axles. The goal? Transform that block of wood into a gravity-powered race car! (Note: If you are unable to attend the December Pack Meeting, please reach out to your den leader to ensure you receive your kit!)
It’s not just about speed—it’s about craftsmanship, sportsmanship, and the bond between a scout and their adult partner. Whether your car is the fastest in the pack or wins "Best in Show" for its creative design, the real prize is the time spent building it together. If you are new to scouting or have any questions about building the derby kit, please reach out to your den leader—someone will be happy to help!
To keep the race fair and fun, all cars must adhere to the Monmouth Council Official Rules.
Official Materials: You must use the BSA official kit wood, wheels, and axles.
Weight Limit: The car must not exceed 5.0 ounces (measured on our official scale). Remember: You can add weights to your car to bring it closer to the limit.
Dimensions: The car must fit on the track. It cannot be wider than 2.75 inches or longer than 7 inches. Using the standard wood block from the official kit will help ensure you remain within the limits.
💡 Pro-Tip for Parents: If your car is slightly over 5.0oz at weigh-in, the easiest fix is to drill small holes in the bottom to remove wood.
Date and Location: See News & Events page for this year's details.
Why is this mandatory? We inspect every car the day before the race to ensure it meets safety and size requirements. Once a car passes inspection, it is "Impounded"—this means the Pack keeps the car overnight so that no further modifications can be made before the race on Sunday.
If you miss Inspection: Your car cannot compete in the Sunday race.
If you fail Inspection: Our leaders will be on-site with tools and advice to help you fix the issue (weight, wheels, etc.) so your scout can still race!
Date and Location: See News & Events page for this year's details.
Uniform: Please wear your Class A (Field) Uniform.
Sportsmanship: We celebrate every car that crosses the finish line. We "cheer for the winner and congratulate the winner."
Hands-Off: Once cars are on the track, only the "Pit Crew" (designated leaders) may handle the cars to prevent accidental damage.
The "Support" Role: This is a project for the Scout. While parents are expected to help with power tools and technical guidance, the design and majority of the work should be done by the child.
The "Penultimate Sunday": We usually race on the second-to-last Sunday in March (check News & Events for the most up-to-date details). It’s a high-energy event, so bring your camera and your team spirit!
